A little-known fact about cushions is that they were originally designed for combat. In the years leading up to the Napoleonic wars, where muskets were replacing crossbows as the next logical step in warfare, there was a parallel drive to develop cushions for both offensive and defensive manoeuvring. The true test of the weapons came about in 1797 when two battalions of soldiers - one armed with muskets, one armed with cushions - met on the battlefield. Since then, cushions have been primarily used for sitting on.
